Martim grew up in Lisbon, Portugal, where he studied Cinematography at the National Film School Conservatory. He continued his education at FAMU (the Czech National Film School) where he attended the International Film program, and after being awarded a Full Scholarship in Fine Arts by the CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN FOUNDATION he moved to Los Angeles, where he completed a Masters in Cinematography at the AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE. During this program he was awarded both the TOM YODA and the BRIDGES/LARSON scholarships in recognition of talent and academic achievement. His thesis film EQUESTRIAN SEXUAL RESPONSE was selected for several festival and was nominated for a Student Academy Award. Martim was also selected to participate in the 2006 BERLINALE TALENT CAMPUS, that takes place during the Berlin Film Festival.

He began his professional career as a camera assistant in Portugal, where he worked with cinematographers from around the world. As a Director of Photography Martim has shot a variety of commercials, music videos, short and feature films.

He is a member of the Portuguese Society of Cinematography - AIP.
